Ann:

Things are heating up rapidly this week.  After noticing that several of my resident does had abandoned their fawns, I decided to sit my own property on Yonges Island.  I re-worked some scrapes along a cutdown, got in the stand early and gave a few doe bleats, which brought in a nice 8 point at 5:20pm yesterday.

Muzzleloader season opened in my area of Virginia on Saturday, Oct 31 and days of anxious anticipation were greeted with early morning drizzle and then afternoon rain.  I hunted the morning at my tree stand near where I live, but saw nothing.  My next hunting opportunity came on Monday morning and I did see 3 does but no bucks.  I went back to my stand Monday afternoon and around 5:30 saw a deer approaching from my right.  When it came into a more open area, I could see that it was a pretty nice buck and was able to get a clean shot as he stepped into one of the shooting lanes about 40 yards from my stand.  The shot through the lungs dropped him after about a 15 yard run.  The buck was a big bodied 8 pointer with a 17 inch outside spread.  My agenda now will be taking out some does to help thin the herd numbers a little.
