Cartridge of the month 30-30
This month we will be looking at one of the top selling center-fired cartridge year after year, the 30-30. This 106-year-old cartridge needs a second or even a third look at its history and performance. This cartridge is chamber in Winchester, Marlin, and Savages and may other brands.
This cartridge has become one of the most used deer rifles thru out the years. It is a very accurate cartridge for it’s caliber, and this cartridge is every effective at 200 yards with a scope-sighted rifle. As we know most shots are less than 200 yards, which makes it prefect cartridge for deer, black bear and antelope. The 30-30 is at the top of the list for recoil sensitive hunters and finds a 61/2 lb. rifle is all that is needed to carry afield. I have found my 30-30 enjoyable to carry while still hunting in thick cover where your rifle needs to be shoulder fast to place a shot.

This cartridge comes in a wide range of factory loads from 55 gr. to 170 gr. for big game. A Remington factory 55 gr. Accelerator has a velocity of 3,495 fps and the Federal 170 gr. Nosler Partition velocity is at 2,175 fsp for your larger big game. I prefer to use a Winchester 150 gr. Power Point at 2,405 fps. So the next time you ready to chose a new rifle this 106- year- old rifle should be one to put at the top of your list.
